Rehabilitation is defined in the dictionary as "restoration to a former capacity or standing". This is the goal of injury rehabilitation, to restore to a pre injury state. At Optimal Functional Performance however, we take rehabilitation a stage further. We like to not only treat the existing injury but to also look at the contributing factors to the injury.
Typically injuries are thought of as being either acute or overuse in origin. This means there was either a known trauma as the cause, an example might be someone landing awkward from a jump and twisting his or her ankle causing ligament injury. An overuse injury is one that develops over time; an example might be someone that performs a repetitive motion enough times to cause a deteriorating effect on the tissues in use, and ultimately injury.
The problem with this type of view is that it isn't always so clear cut. If we take another look at our first example above, we see a definite trauma linking the injury to a known occurrence, however on closer inspection we would note that there could be a lot of contributing factors involved. For example the injured person may not have had the eccentric strength in the legs to absorb the landing, causing the ankle to buckle under the weight. Likewise a lack of proprioception in the joint receptors may have caused a loss of balance on landing and the "going over" on the ankle.
On rehabilitating this injured party, if we restore them to a pre injury state and that state is sub optimal we are then placing them in a position for further injury. We need to consider all involved factors to injury. You are guaranteed this with Optimal Functional Performance.
Another vital aspect of rehabilitation is the actual rehabilitation program. Again it is very easy to fall into the trap of generic exercises being linked to certain types of injuries. This is a cook book approach to rehabilitation and will only deliver cook book results. At Optimal Functional Performance we strive to deliver a personal rehabilitation program based on your individual needs.
Simply put, if you need to be able to do a certain task as part of your work or sport then after injury you need to be able to do that task again and without the danger of re injury. To many times we're told to rest and avoid this or that, well this is not good enough in the real world of high performance sport or indeed the real world of financial survival where work dictates what we have to be functionally able to do.
At Optimal Functional Performance we recognize the need of our clients to return to function, we recognize that this function is individually based, we recognize that each client is an individual and has individual needs and in some cases individual barriers that need to be cleared before true rehabilitation can be achieved.
Skilful Rehabilitation is a speciality. If your sporting career or your working career depends on your health and you functioning at an optimal level, then there is only one place to go to for your injury treatments and rehabilitation and that is Optimal Functional Performance.

We don't just treat symptoms, we like to get to the cause, and where possible, we like to correct the dysfunction leading to the injury. This allows total rehabilitation and prevention of further injury.
